NAZ

The cold New York air swept through the bustling streets as I walked out of Round Two, my daughter’s gym that had quickly become a beacon of transformation in this city. Talani’s decision to give the exterior a much-needed facelift had brought a crew of construction workers, and the air was buzzing with their activity.

As I neared the entrance, I noticed a young construction worker ascending a ladder, a new sign clutched in his hands. Talani’s vision for the gym’s exterior was in progress, and I couldn’t help but appreciate the effort to make Round Two even more appealing.

Damn. My baby girl’s been grinding, I thought jovially. She’s a hustler. Just like her old man.

The serenity of the moment shattered as a sudden cry pierced the air. The ladder wobbled beneath the worker’s weight, and before I could register what the fuck was happening, he lost his footing and began hurtling towards the unforgiving ground below.

In an instant, my instincts kicked in, and before I knew it, big beige wings tore through my topcoat, catching the brisk wind as I propelled forward. The powerful beats of my wings carried me to the falling man just in time, preventing a collision with the hard concrete.

As the onlookers gasped in awe, my attention shifted to another impending danger. One of the massive letters from the overhead sign had broken loose, hurtling towards a bystander oblivious to the impending disaster. With a swift move, I flapped my wings in his direction and intercepted the plummeting letter, using my superhuman strength to guide it away from the unsuspecting onlooker.

Talani, Breana, Yamir, and his students must’ve heard all the commotion because they rushed outside and found themselves amid the growing crowd of onlookers. Their expressions were a mix of shock and awe as they witnessed the spectacle unfolding before them. Talani’s eyes widened in recognition, a spark of realization illuminating her face.

“Is that—?” Breana began, her words caught in a breathless gasp.

“Yep, it’s him,” Yamir confirmed, his voice carrying a tone of disbelief.

I lowered the construction worker gently to the ground, ensuring he was steady on his feet before turning to face the trio. Talani’s gaze bore into mine, a silent acknowledgment passing between us. She knew the return of my powers meant a resurgence of attention, both welcome and unwelcome. It was also her first time seeing me in true angel form.

Breana shook her head in disbelief, her eyes flickering between the hovering wings and the awestruck crowd.

“Naz, you’re really back in action,” Yamir said with a gleeful grin.

The scattered applause from the onlookers reached my ears, and I offered a modest nod in response to Yamir’s comment. My focus shifted to the fallen ladder and the construction worker who now stood unharmed, albeit visibly shaken. The nigga had obviously never seen any shit like this before.

Talani’s voice cut through the murmurs of the crowd. “Dad, we were just trying to give the gym a new look, not create a fucking social media frenzy,” she whispered.
